The Veterinary Assistant assists, supports, and helps Veterinarians in providing medical and technical support in the health care of animals at the city's animal shelters.1 Prepares for and assists veterinarians with routine and emergency medical procedures to ensure activities are conducted in an efficient manner; performs microchipping and various intake responsibilities for animals.

4 Assists veterinarians with and administers prescribed medications to animals in order to provide support and nursing care; calculates dosages for sedation, pain management, and antibiotics.
5 Prepares, sterilizes, and monitors surgical instrument packs and supplies for surgical procedures and treatment; performs euthanasia when needed or requested.
6 Assists in maintaining the inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies and restocks medical kits to ensure supplies are readily available.
7 Evaluates the general condition and disposition of animals to determine which animals have the best chance for adoption.
8 Maintains accurate records on all animals; updates software and systems with correct information.
9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
EDUCATION:
• High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
• One (1) year of experience as a veterinary assistant/technician working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter/animal control setting
EQUIVALENCY(IES):
• An Associate degree (or higher) in an animal/veterinary science or veterinarian technology field will meet the education and experience requirements
• A current Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) certificate issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) will meet the education and experience requirements
LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):
• Must obtain Euthanasia certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within probationary period
• Must obtain Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Introduction certification issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) within one (1) year of appointment
OTHER REQUIREMENT(S):
• NO Felony Drug offenses within the last 10 years
• NO Animal Cruelty convictions
• Availability to work varying shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
PREFERENCE(S):
• College coursework in animal/veterinary science, veterinary assistant certification, animal control officer certification or euthanasia technician certification is a plus. Experience in a high quality, high volume spay and neuter clinic is a plus
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.
Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.

Essential Job Functions: The incumbent must be able to consistently perform all of the following duties and responsibilities with or without a reasonable accommodation.
• Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments and escort into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, pain score, body condition score) and record all in the electronic medical record, begin documentation of the patient visit in the electronic medical record by documenting a thorough patient history.
• Assist doctors with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision from the doctor and the Lead Technician.
• Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the doctor, and help maintain the electronic medical record.
• Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results to doctor and clients, maintain and update client/patient records.
• Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist doctor and/or technician in anesthetizing patients, and under supervision of the doctor and/or technician maintain patients safely under anesthesia while monitoring vital parameters, help monitor patients during recovery and prepare them for going home or transfer to an overnight care facility.
• Under supervision of the doctor and/or technician, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients including giving injectable and oral medications as well as intravenous fluid therapy; keep patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated and directed by doctor), safely walk canine patients when necessary for elimination.
• Under direction of the Hospital Office Manager, assist in the training of new staff members and general dissemination of knowledge as required.
• Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning of environment based on necessity as well as based on a pre-determined maintenance schedule.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no immediate supervisory duties.
Work Environment
The majority of job duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary) and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of this partner’s time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
Education/Experience
• Preferred to have at least 1 year previous experience working in a veterinary practice or sufficient experience to ensure excellent performance at the above-listed skills
